to say regarding her son's death tonight? >> reporter: reed, she says her son did not deserve to die. she describes her son as a happy go lucky man. she says he's now focused on seeking justice. >> really, i just want the truth, i want justice for my son. >> reporter: danielle steagall has no idea where police would shoot her 23-year-old son. she says her son was in las vegas visiting his uncle. the u.s. marshal say childress was a wanted arizona man, wanted on an attempted murder charge. >> the u.s. marshals know exactly what his charges are, they know what's going on with him. it's false. they need the plips out here, so they lied. >> reporter: police say the u.s. marshals asked them for help. officers tracked down chill dress to this northwest neighborhood off desert and cimarron on new year's eve. police thought the 22-year-old

two officers ended up firing on childress. they stress he did not cooperate with police command. >> he's wanted out of arizona on a number of violent felonies. >> reporter: this man who considers himself childress' brother says they had no right. >> you're 15 feet from someone and you're a trained officer and you cannot determine whether it's a cell phone or a gun? >> reporter: steagall plans on making sure police answer the questions on what led them to shoot her son. >> hard to believe. until i see him i still won't believe it. >> reporter: yesterday's officer involved shooting was the 16th of 2015. out of those 16, 11 ended fatally. early next week metro police plan on having a news conference on this officer involved shooting. live, antonio castellan. >> marie: breaking news out of

an inmate who escaped custody. 34-year-old sonny perez walked away from a conservation camp, believed to be south on 93. he was sentenced for grand theft auto in clark county and was last seen wearing blue issued prison clothing. if you think you've seen him, call crime stoppers. >> anchor: just hours into 2016 and north las vegas police are looking for their first murder suspect of the year, it happened at a home near centennial parkway and walnut. investigators say a 44-year-old man was shot and killed inside following an argument. that shooting happening right in front of family members and children. detectives have not released a suspect description. north las vegas officers do not believe it was a random act of violence either. if you know anything that can help them in their investigation, the number is on your screen. >> marie: a man is recovering

caught fire on i-15. it happened just this afternoon near the apex part of north las vegas. a viewer sent in this video of the fire which could be seen from miles away. a man inside the r.v. suffered barns to his hands, his wife escaped unharmed. no word on what started the fire. >> anchor: now to a story developing out of the middle east, a gunman who opened fire on a street in tel aviv, israelis caped officers after kill two and wounding several more. video captured some of the attack and now police are looking for a possible connection to isis terrorists. >> reporter: captured on a security camera, young people relaxing at a bar, then diving for cover. in fear. a gunman appears, firing relentlessly. second later one survivor looks

seven people injured, two in critical condition. we were shaking, this woman says, we hid in the storage room. more chilling security camera footage shows the same gunman moments earlier in a grocery store, apparently buying food. he pulls a arrive free his backpack and begins killing, leaving bullet holes and bar stools overturned in terror. no happy new year here. one survivor thought of last year's paris massacre and took shelter. >> it was like -- >> reporter: a manhunt is under way for the shooter. israeli media are reporting police have identified an arab israeli suspect. some believe this could be the country's first isis inspired attack. investigators say the motive may be criminal. one of those killed was aged 26.

says, he collapsed when he saw him dead. so far the killer is still at large. until he is caught, his motive will likely be unclear. but israel, which has seen a wave of violence with palestinians in recent months, may have been the setting today for one of the first terrorist attacks of 2016. >> marie: new video shows fire damage inside a dubai high rise on new year's eve. authorities say they're still trying to determine what caused the fire that injured at least 14 people, although none seriously. the fire was still smoldering earlier today, as firefighter worked to douse the embers. the building one of the most upscale hotels and residences in dubai, boasting nearly 200 rooms and more than 600 residential units. rentals of a one unit -- one bedroom can run $70,000 a year. >> anchor: millions in the

from widespread flooding, at least 24 people have died in floods and two remain missing. both the mississippi and other rivers crested this week, threatening thousands of homes across the region. officials say there's a little bit of good news. the water levels are dropping. evacuation orders were lifted in some communities in illinois. experts say the flooded waters of the mississippi are moving 10 times faster than water at niagara falls. >> marie: las vegas hits a wedding milestone, nearly a year and a half after a federal judge overthrew nevada's constitutional ban on same sex marriage, one lucky couple is making history this new year's weekend. kelsey thomas joins us live with the story. >> reporter: marie, a new milestone for the new year, we're talking 5,000 marriage licenses, and of course in true las vegas style, the couple to be number 5,000 is getting the

were finally granted marriage licenses in clark county. 5,000 marriages in the books and more to come. dimitrou and ronald now planning their honeymoon. you can see that that lucky couple, very shy, very humble, not expecting tv cameras to be in their face when they came to las vegas. they knew they were getting married, they were hoping for a low key wedding. they say they'll probably stay in las vegas a lot longer though because all of those gifts include a room at circus circus, mandalay bay. they're going to get to go on the high roller for free and they will also see the michael jackson cirque show. kelsey thomas, news 3. >> anchor: and after that they get back to just real live married couple stuff. >> marie: that's right. so much for low key.

zion, the only thing moving was shadows. here in our back yard at red rock, a gorgeous day, although on the chilly side and that's continuing at this hour. up on the mountain no snow now, but that will change too. lodge levels about 7700 feet, they're going to get snow next week. peak gusts for the day only 14 miles per hour. in the far southwest part of town, coming in at 41. it's 35% relative humidity. in neighborhoods across the valley, it's still chilly, we've got mid to upper 30's, but they bumped up the temperatures once the clouds started rolling in. we have a couple neighborhood right around 40 degrees. morning lows government as chilly as 21 in southern highlands. lots of mid 20s, especially the east side of town, that's where we saw the 30s. and a lot more neighborhoods

a15 in pioche, they got the tie with a morning low of half a dozen to get new year's day started. all right. tomorrow we'll start in the 30s, get to 50 at lunch time, low to mid 50s for a high temperature. win not a factor, 5 miles per hour or less all day long. clouds, though, will be a factor, as the cold air finally is pushing east. it's taking a while, but that cold air will march east water over the next couple days and the east coast and upper midwest will start feel like winter. we'll feel more temperate. clouds are coming out of the west off the pacific, that is much milder, so that's why our temperatures won't be too cold for one. and two, these clouds will be joined by some sub tropical moisture that will give us a chance for rain. that will hold off until after the weekend. the action up north, that's going north. get ready for what should be more of an el nino pattern with chances for rain over several

26 will be the low in pahrump, 28 mesquite. high temperatures for your second of january. 42 on the mountain, 58 at the lake. boulder city should max out at 53. the las vegas valley overnight, clouds, some neighborhoods will stay barely above freezing, 53 under a mostly cloudy sky tomorrow. we'll bump it up to 56 on sunday. then we have the chance for rain. monday's storm, and the storm is probably giving it too much credibility, but monday's rain will mainly be from las vegas southward. i'm not expecting too much water in town. tuesday a slight chance. wednesday could be the day we get a good dose of rain. it will be active and the morning lows getting back in the 40s. no more cold toes. >> marie: that's something new for the new year. >> anchor: thanks, kevin. still to come, a popular new year's resolution, losing weight.

by taking a very cold plunge. >> marie: finally tonight, hundreds of people in wisconsin took a plunge into the new year. >> anchor: swimmers braved the waters in milwaukee for the annual new year's day polar bear plunge. in fact a cast of characters ran in that bone chilling water including a trump iter with the polar bear cape, even a bride and groom. >> marie: i think i just saw them. the money raised is for the local fire department. participants say the 20-degree weather was much more mild than recent new year's.
